In this film we speak to British Artist Marcus Coates about his practice and specifically about his works held in the British Council Collection. A new series of photographs by Coates are on show in a major new exhibition titled; Private Utopia: Contemporary Art from the British Council Collection. Coates is best known for performative films and photographs in which the he inhabits the minds and bodies of animals of all types, exploring shamanic traditions and working to better understand human nature. Private Utopia has been created in partnership with the Asahi Shimbun; Tokyo Station Gallery; Itami City Museum of Art; Kochi Museum of Art and Okayama Museum of Art. Together, the curators of each museum have selected works from the holdings of the British Council Collection and the exhibition will tour to four venues in Japan throughout 2014/15.
