Marcus Coates: Utrecht Centraal commission extended due to Popular Demand

Arrivals/Departures, 2016 - 2022
Marcus Coates' commission for Utrecht Centraal train station has been extended by the City Council to 2022

Utrecht Centraal is the largest and busiest railway station in the Netherlands.
Arrivals/Departures is a digital calendar located at the entrance to the station.
Each day, this large led display announces an arrival or departure in nature. For example on the 3rd of May the sign read;
03/05 Wild bluebells are in full flower in the woods
and the on 4th May;
04/05 Young tawny owls may be calling now, before they have broken out of their egg.

Together with Wageningen University, Netherlands, Marcus compiled a calendar of nature events for every day of the year that occur annually in the Netherlands. These events were once integral to recognising and marking time across the changing seasons.
Particularly in urban environments the daily events in nature have become less significant to us as they become less visible and decreasingly unfamiliar. The work aims to bring an awareness of these events into the everyday urban world.

Arrivals/Departure was commissioned by Public Works and the City Council of Utrecht.
