Louise Giovanelli’s new paintings ‘Axis’ and ‘Ether’ depict light falling upon or emitting from close-ups of hair. Light: absorbed, softened and reflected, is modelled by Giovanelli in thin translucent layers of oil paint, whilst compositions are interrogated again, and yet again. Evocative of cinema, the seeming informality of her imagery belies an ongoing analytical enquiry into painting. In ‘Ether’, the bright X like glint of a jewel reveals a recurring structural motif, whilst the smouldering honeyed warmth of ‘Axis’ exemplifies the optical colour mixing techniques of the early Renaissance, connecting her work back through time to artists such as Duccio and the canons of Art History.
