A collector of found phrases, words and lyrics, Glasgow-based artist Sue Tompkins is known for her diverse practice ranging from painting, text works on paper, and performances distinguished by her unique delivery and idiosyncratic voice. Tompkins’ layered paintings on canvas mix obscure subjective references gleaned from the everyday, with textures that convey the sense of action involved in the making. Created by hand instead of brushes, her approach to reworking the canvases is closely connected to how she edits her performances, many of which are derived from her text on newsprint pieces; words are ordered, interrupted, and repeated - hinting of the person or memory of a particular time in mind.
